This summer, I was very fortunate to take part in the recording of an amazing new jazz trio live in the studio during a warm May weekend in Oslo.

Pete Rock / INI – “Center of Attention” (1995)

Pete Rock, the master of the melodic and jazzy beat, has produced all of the tracks on this originally unreleased album from the group INI. This is classic hip-hop at its very best and one of the few rap albums I can play from start to finish without pause because of the stunning quality and variation. Below is a sample track called “Mind Over Matter” (sorry about the lo-fi sound):

    Lylit – “Unexpected” EP

The Austrian born jazz singer and multi-instrumentalist Lylit has just released her first EP as a soul performer, with a full album to follow early in 2011. She was picked up by the Kedar Entertainment CEO Kedar Massenburg (who has signed among others Erykah Badu & D’Angelo) after she sent her demo to the labels of artists she admired. You can listen to one of the tracks from the EP called “The Plan” below:

Karyn Paige – “The KP EP” (2010)

Overall the KP EP’s production sounds organic and modern, very much like Prince’s latest albums. Some of the songs sounded very pop for me at first listening, but as I listened closer interesting variations in the arrangements sipped through and the whole thing grew on me. There’s a good live-feel to this EP, a lot of variations in rhythms, though always funky, within the the musical genres of boogie-disco, nu-soul, pop and r&b.
